As president of the Amateur Boxing Association, since 2003 Dian has set the platform to elevate boxing from being yet another lack-lustre sport to being one of the premier & sought after sports in Sri Lanka.
A strong belief in getting the foundation right and carefully hand-picking a group of professionals who share his passion and philosophy, Dian has a strong commitment and vision for the sport coupled with the winnings and progress achieved in the last three years. He has been instrumental in generating funds for the ABA, enabling the young Sri Lankan boxers to partake in as many as 11 international competitions in the year 2006 alone, the highest ever in the history of Sri Lankan Boxing.
With a vision to achieve an Olympic medal by 2012, Dian Gomes has worked tirelessly to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to enable young Sri Lankan pugilists to become world class athletes. His hard work is already showing signs of success with Anuruddha Ratnayake of Slimline Boxing Club qualifying to represent Sri Lanka at Beijing Olympics. This was the first time in 40 years that a Sri Lankan boxer is representing the country at the highest echelon of the game.
Dian’s passion towards sports is not restricted to boxing. Having been appointed as Vice President of the National Olympic Committee in 2005, Dian has made significant contributions to national sports overall, leading a 225 member strong Sri Lankan contingent as Chef De Mission at the recently concluded Asian Games in Doha.
